Competition Shoot

Post by KiwiKev »

Our club recently introduced a 50 meter Vettorli for Lever Action. The main rule is that you must shoot free-standing and must use original pistol caliber. Any powder will do/ You have about 1/2 an hour to get away 13 shots, the best 10 count for scoring each shot is graded out of 10 on a standard target.

I thought I might give it a try. I shoot at .357 Rossi with an octagonal barrel. 38 Special 158gr LFN 5.5 gr trailboss. This is my first attempt.
Score 83/100

I encourage anyone to post their 50 m or 50 yard targets so we can keep a tally. Obviously my score of 83 is easy to beat. Give it a go!

Yeah - postal kind of - a smart phone camera competition!

Target info - Yes I guess we should be shooting at roughly the same kind of target!

This one has 10 concentric circles with 1 inch between each circle. The bull's eye being 2 inches in diameter.

Let me do some research on a common target if it will be a problem.

Well, if it's going to be scored we should all use the same target. :)

Sheet of typing paper. A prezackly 2 inch circle in the middle. 10 Shots. Distance of each shot from exact center measured and added together. Metrics are easier to do that with.

For us 'Mericans, the NRA A-25 target has a 1" "X" ring, 2" 10 ring, and an inch thereafter. That would be an equivalent target to the one pictured... now, as to 50 meters... that might be problematic!!! I THINK I can pace of 50 39" paces... I can't find a place to download one from...

What about a NRA SR-1 or the B6 target you can print from here?

http://downloads.bisonballistics.com/SR-1.pdf

http://www.flat5.net/b-6rc.pdf

Rules: Time limit? One Calendar month.
Score: Out of 100
Length: 50 meters or 50 yards? Or who cares? (50 yards is roughly 14 ft shorter than 50 yards - rough enough gentlemen and ladies. Though I could shoot 50 yards if I had too.
Each shooter submits a dated image of their target.

Overall score: Best average score over a maximum of 4 submitted targets over a calendar month. At the end of each month we declare the winner for that month.

BASIC - lets keep it simple - Rules!

1. Repeating Lever-action rifle, center-fire pistol caliber ONLY (.32 to .45 cal)
2. Shot in the free standing position. (unsupported)
3. Iron sights or tang sights ONLY - no fancy stuff - scopes etc
4. B6 target.
5. 10 Shots only
6. 50 yards (ish)
7. Image of target and with name and date written on target, posted for consideration.
8. A maximum of 4 targets submitted for each Calendar month.
9. Your highest score counts.
10. Winner posted at the beginning of the next Calendar month.
11. Open to all members of the forum as of October 1st 2016

Approved target:

http://www.flat5.net/b-6rc.pdf

Scoring: Count 10,9,8 and 7 if you hit the paper. A hit on the line counts to the highest value. Where there is a tie the most Xs hit in the 10 ring will be the tie- breaker.

SASS have a "buckaroo" category for individuals aged 13 and under. They use .22 ammo. If someone wants to set up a "buckaroo" competition that is great.

I suggest we stick to center fire .32 to .45 cal pistol.

Scopes? Refer to Rule 2.

Griff are you interested in being the seconder for scores? From now until the 1st of October we can trial a few practice rounds. Should we limit the number of shooters? First twenty?(too optimistic?) to register a target for that month will be considered registered for that month's competition.

1. Levergun (repeaters), pistol calibre ONLY, shot in the free standing position. 10 shots.
2. Iron sights or tang sight ONLY - no fancy stuff - scopes etc
3. Sr-1 or b6 target.
4. 50 yards (ish)
5. Image of target and date posted(written on target).
6. A maximum of 4 targets submitted for that month.
7. Your average score will be calculated.Let's not do this, just use highest score...
8. Winner posted at the beginning of the next Calendar month.
9. Prize: ??? for best target between 10/1 and 12/31, 50 cast bullets... (Hope you like .358, .452 or .309)
I can do that. No limit on # of shooters, only criteria, just be a member of forum as of Oct 1.

Hi Griff, can you elaborate?

"ties broken by "X" count."

If you hit the line the hole must be over 50%?

Re: Competition Shoot

I've been taught that any line cut counts to the higher value. (Pays to shoot a larger caliber!) :P Actually, it's much easier to tell if the line has been cut than whether 50% of the hole is in the higher value circle. The "X" count comes into play when two (or more), shooters have the same score, you count the number of hits in the "X" portion of the 10 ring and that count becomes the tie-breaker... if still tied, then tied it is.

Just a suggestion. Along with the target pictures a picture of the rifle used to shoot the targets should be included.

Okay Griff, I have amended rules. I think we could just stick to the B6 target for consistency. I don't know if we need an image of their rifle. You could post an image of a rifle without a scope and then use a scope which would not be in the spirit of the competition. Let assume that we are all honest folk who will abide by some basic rules for a fun competition.

Sounds good. I've drafted a new thread, wholly for the posting of targets... any discussion of same should either be in this one, or in one the poster starts... at least until after the competition closes... Only posts other than those of the shooter's target should be those of the official scorekeeper... validating the score, KiwiKev and myself as second. I'll put it up a few days before competition opens... (as I'll be at a match til the 2nd of Oct. and don't know if I'll have internet out there)!! I'll amend this thread with a link to the "official" scoring thread at that time.

Maybe we can get a moderator to make it a sticky for the month of the competition?

Oh yeah, be kind in your comments, as your target could be the next up for discussion. And don't forget your ear & eye protection as you shoot!

I will put up the official thread for submitting scores tomorrow. In the official score thread, I've put that if someone feels like donating prizes, please PM either myself or KiwiKev.

Be prepared to pay for the postage if you donate a prize. Recognize that we have members from Europe, Africa, South America, Australia, New Zealand, besides the US... PM either myself or KiwiKev with your donation... and we'll PM you back after the close of match.

I might start off with the donation of a set of 45Colt RCBS Carbide dies for the top score... If you have something nicer, then this'll go to 2nd place! These ain't new, have been hanging around my shop for a few years... but I don't think I've ever used 'em.

Rule clarification

Here is the difference between A4 and US Letter
Image

I think it is okay to score the 7 as you did hit the paper. I am guessing the B-6 targets will be either A4 or Letterhead.

Rule: 10 shots only. I think this means you load 10 shots into your rifle and take 10 shots at the target. In the Club Vettorli we allow 13 shots at the target and count the best 10. Twenty shots for 2 targets?

Cheers

Here is our range and some bits and pieces.
The 50 yard target is on the far right. Interestingly the B6 target when moved to 50 yards is the same size as the 50m target. I have posted a few images to give folk an idea. Including a practice target which has the outline of the size of the B6 target.

I'm really enjoying this. I've never shot free hand for score. I've just done it for hunting, if I can hit the pie plate, I'm good to go. This is much harder. I'm using different muscles holding that octagon barrel up there for so long. 50 rounds and that front blade is swinging wildly.
Thanks for starting this.

Great shooting Tycer. And Good comments. Only hoping that more will dust of their leverguns and give the competition a crack. Interesting comment about being in the free standing position. It certainly is quite different to using a sling commonly associated with target shooting in a lying position. I personally found shooting a levergun in the lying position quite awkward, especially when it came to working the action.

When I shoot I normally have some sort of support either for the gun or me. Most often sitting or kneeling, sometimes standing with a tree as support for the forward hand.

Shasta, showing off his skills as a Levergun Silhouette shooter, (is that now "Master Class"?) is in the lead with a 95! Fantastic shooting. He's backed that up with a 94 that matches Tycer's best w/a 94. Top 4 scores have been shot with either a .32WCF or .44WCF!

10 days remaining! ...9 for you fellars west of the IDL!

Ok, approximately 2-½ days left to get your scores posted @ October Lever action Pistol Caliber - Competition Shoot. Although I posted a couple of new targets, Shasta is still high @ 95. I'm sure there's a couple of you guys that can give him a run for top finish! Myself, I think I could of done better with a pistol!

Need some incentive? How about just the braggin' rights?

Surprised we have not got a lot more. Maybe folks are wanting to see how the first round goes. October has been pretty wet and windy here. Twp more days!

Will we just announce the November competition in the same thread?
