Monte Walsh

Post by aussie »

Just watched both versions, Lee Marvin and Tom Selleck. I can't decide which version is better. Not that it will sway me in any way, but I'm just curious which one you guys prefer.

It's been a long time since I saw Lee Marvin but Tom Selleck was pretty darn funny. I'd have to say I liked Selleck the best.

I like that the Selleck version had more period correct accoutrements, whereas the Marvin version had the rougher, grittier feel to it. Visually, the later version was better... But, in sooth, why pick?

Both are worth watching! Recently watched both back to back, one each day, and thoroughly enjoyed 'em. Excellent job by both leading men, especially.

Selleck made one of the very few remakes that brought something new/different to the table worth putting gravy on. Remarkable, and a lovely production for the eye and ear. But the first one, as said, has sand. And the scene of Marvin trying to roll a cigarette in bed with the incomparable Jeanne Moreau is a masterpiece of silent film. If you are one of those guys that don't like or love westerns, but rather actually need them for the health of your soul, you are blessed to have both. Ride the high country.

The bucking horse scene was best in the Lee Marvin movie, but overall I like the Selleck version better. If you are a real Monte Walsh fan, I suggest reading the book. It covers a far greater span of his life, literally from cradle to grave. He meets a very heroic end.

Like them both for the differences that they have(if that makes sense) Probably rather watch the Tom Selleck version because I think he's probably one of the last good western actors. I agree with Shasta the book is really good

I am old enough that I saw the Lee Marvin version when it came out. I enjoy the Tom Selleck version but always like Lee Marvin's better, mainly because the buckin' horse episode was so well done. A person should have both in their library PLUS several copies of the book. (several because someone is sure to want to borrow it and you want to make sure you keep one) :)

Several years ago, an older friend and I were discussing this very topic. Quite a knowledgeable man of the West, he nevertheless had never read the book..
I had a paperback copy in my leather shop, which I offered to let him take and read..
He brought it back to me a week or so later, and as he handed it to me, I noticed a glistening in his eyes, and his voice broke as he said, "This man Gets it..!"
That was the finest book review I have heard..

I have this movie in a 3 box set with Crossfire Trail and Last Stand At Sabre River and love all three movies. I prefer this Monte Walsh over the Lee Marvin one but both are good in their own ways.

You need to watch them both at least a dozen times to see the real difference. The later (Selleck) version doesn't capture the essence of the real story being told in the movie. This is really an emotional story of 2 cowboys that are seeing the end of the open range and how that impacts their lives.

Chet recognizes it is over and tries to settle down with the hardware widow, meanwhile Monte thinks about it and can't deal with the change it would require in his life. Chet is killed, so you would never know if he truly adapted to the sedentary life of a shop keeper.

This is a story of 2 real cowboys and how they handle old age and a change in life they can't control.

Quotes...

Chet "Nobody gets to be a cowboy forever"

Monte "It ain't dead, as long as there is one cowboy taking care of one cow"

Monte "Cowboys don't get married, unless they stop being cowboys."

And if you missed this quote, you missed the whole point of the movie. When Monte (Lee Marvin) turns down the opportunity to be "Texas Jack Butler" which would set him up for life financially, he says "I ain't gonna' spit on my whole life."

The first "Monte Walsh" was the better story as it was portrayed in the movie. If you have had the chance to be around a real cowboy, and I don't mean the straw hat wearing drugstore cowboys of today, but real cowboys, you could see the difference...

I have the book and both DVD`s and they are all good, envy the days they portray at least they knew who the enemy was in most cases.
I`m a little disappointed in Sellecks political views though, seen him on the view where he said he wasn`t voting for either candidate , kinda figured he would be for trump but each too their own I guess.

Both movies were made from the same script, with minor differences here and there..

All the Cowboys in the Selleck version were a little too clean, which seems to be a fault with a lot of westerns lately..

In the Marvin version, you could get a whiff of unwashed range dust, right off the screen..

One sleepless night, many years past, I saw this film for the first time; I instantly became a fan of Lee Marvin; I never miss this movie if I know it's on. I almost always find remakes of great movies somewhat lacking..., if not abysmal; not so with Monte Walsh. In my opinion, as a rabid western movie addict ; without Selleck ,that remake would have continued that legacy. I like them both equally; but for different reasons, just as others have mentioned. I just hope no one tries to re make Tom Horn ! :o
