Winchester 1873 Musket Value

Post by Pop Watts »

What value would you guys put on a mint 1873 musket with correct bayonet?
The bayonet has no serial number on it.
The gun has all original blue and the wood is great.
Bore is bright and shiney.
The cleaning rod is missing.
Is there anything to look out for on these guns?
I would like to hear what you think.
I am in Australia, so I know I will most likely have to pay more than you guys in the US.

A mint musket is very rare and would be pricy.Years ago Uberti made a run of these so watch out for a fake that has been done over

.

I would expect one in at least 90% original condition to sell for $4K (USD), or more, in a well-advertized/online guns-only auction.

Howdy Pop,
10 years ago a bud and myself were at an auction when this 73 Musket came up in the same description and condition that your talking about. As I was not interested in it, I told my bid to go ahead, so him and a couple of other guys went head to head and my bud finally won it at $2,700. A couple of years later my bud was walking it around in a quality gun show where people walk around with large wads of cash. He was asking $4,500 with no takers. Finally a dealer from Alaska bought it for $3,700.

I figure a 98% third model musket would go for about $5-6,000 today. (I don't care what they are priced at on the internet.). I don't know why, but 1873 muskets are less desirable than standard 1873's, condition for condition. A 98% standard round barrel, THIRD model will bring $8,500 with an octagon going for 2 thou more. (44 cal) Another thing, muskets are commonly found in beautiful condition-------6

This would be retail
1st. Gen. Colt SAA’s, 1878 D.A.45 and a 38-55 Marlin TD

Thanks for the responses guys.
This gun is at a well known dealers shop here in Sydney - Lawrence Ordinance
He specialises in military firearms.
Told me he sourced it in the US.
His price is $7500 Australian, about $7000 US.
He says he has some room to move if I am interested.
I just think that I will keep my money in my pocket for a while and see if I can pick up a little bit better bargain.
The problem blokes like me have here in Australia is that there is just not the quantity of good old Winchesters offered for sale here that you are seeing in the States, so we usually have to pay too much to own a nice gun.

G'day Pop,

I thought it might be the one at Lawrance Ordnance, it certainly looks nice but well over my budget.
