What's the knob for or do?

It is a sighting device and it has a prism set up that allows you to shoot amazingly accurate angles. Mine is an older version and doesn't have the knob which I think focuses the sighting mechanism. Mine is a fixed focus. The body is of a solid machined aluminum block. A bit heavy at times but dependable like no other.

I have a simple Silva. Good enough to find the Rig, but, I would not land navigate with it. (As I've mentioned, I really can't hike much...so, a compass would be only to get my bearings if a wounded deer took me on a cross country adventure). It's so cloudy all the time in the NW, that it's good to know north.

I have an old Marbles that is meant to pin on your chest so you can look down at it while you're walking. IIRC I got it back in the late 60's.

I also have a compass built into my Steiner Navigator glasses, which really helps navigating the coastal flats




and I have a good Suunto chart compass, though transparent rather than opaque like Brent's.
I've never been a GPS guy - biggest part of it is I don't want to mess with electronics when I'm outdoors. Though I'll admit I'm happy to travel with someone who wants to mess with his.

Most of my hunting is like yours Piller.
And like Mike I also have the compass app. & Google earth on my phone.
I got mine mostly for the 'thats cool' factor. My 1940's wool plaid hunting pants
have a built-in compass pocket that just seemed lonely without a vintage compass.

Since we are on the subject of compasses, I am reminded of a story i heard many years ago about a very cheap, low quality compass imported from China that had the brand name of Tates Compass. They were so crummy that they seldom if ever functioned properly, and that is where the old saying came from.....

"He who has a Tates is lost."

Now I keep an old Marbles pinned on my pack strap and carry an eTrex, but my first time in the Mojave I was getting pretty tired, thirsty and heading back to camp when a buddy on a ridge came across the radio with "Uh, you do know camp is the other way..."

I picked it up at Dixon Muzzleloaders, in Kempton, Pa.

Kasenit has saved me more times than a compass. Well, it saved me time, money, and energy to fix a few hammer notches myself than to pay a gunsmith and wait 6 weeks to get the job done.---6

That's the same compass that I used during my elk hunts during the 90's in Colorado. I didn't have a GPS just a topo map.

Luckily, it's attached to a 19' cuddy with 130 horses pushing!

The above pix was before replacing the compass "vial", which was 10 years old at the time and half full. The boat's prior owner said he Never needed a compass anyway *... The Ritchie company sells an easily replaced module that is half the cost of a new unit.

* And that's why they call it dead reckoning!

I'm oriented towards electronics too. The piece that's in deep storage is my Furuno commercial unit. Looks like this borrowed photo.



This connects to a computer, used to have an external monitor in the trolling cockpit area. Have more chart data on that computer than most govt charts.

This is part of the stuff that rides with me everywhere. Almost.

it's the cheapo wal-mart chicom imitation of the expensive cabelas chicom made boxes.

it's useful for a certain amount of containment, and has useful stuff that I wouldn't want to have to go looking for if I needed it. can't jog with it in the butt packer tho.

covering a few bases here. too bad the ax and bow saw don't fit in there. The Garmin nuvi doesn't live in that box either, it lives on the binnacle shelf in the man van. maybe I need another cheapo chicom box.

I bought this one back in the early 70's at Kmart when I was 12 or 13 years old.
