ROSSI BOLT MOUNTED PEEP SIGHT

Post by Nate Kiowa Jones »

After two major hurricanes and two operations to repairs some worn out knees and shoulder I'm finally close to getting this thing worked out. The prototypes are done and the patents are applied for. It started as a fixed non-adjustable but after some input from folks various adjustable arrangements were tried to have it finally evolve down to 2 versions. The one pictured here is the fixed W&E version that also doubles as a functional replacement for the safety. In the ready to fire position the sight is turned so the front sight can be acquired through the aperture.
Image

With the sight turned (counter-clockwise from the top) so you can't see the front sight the safety is now activated and the gun is not ready to fire.

Image

The second version Bolt Mounted Peep prototype is at the CNC shop and when I get it back I'll post some pictures. But in the mean time it is a fixed safety replacement (a plug for the safety) but does have provisions for elevation adjustment.

I still don't have prices worked out. The BOLT MOUNTED PEEP SIGHT/SAFETY has several machining set that have to be worked out to decide the most cost effective way to do it.

Whatcha think?

Very cool. Does the non-adjustable one have any ability to raise/lower during installation, such as with shims of some sort? Or will all adjustment have to take place at the front sight.

Glad to see you did something useful with that ugly safety. Good job, I think that'll work. Is the aperture threaded for other sized peeps?

Edited: I see the first picture shows what appears to be a screw in aperture. My bad.

Looks excellent.

I have to modify my answer a "little". After thinking about this last nite... I have to say your solution is "elegant." At least, I think that's the word that engineers use when describing a solution to something that's modified in such a way that it is MORE functional, yet looks as tho it was part of the original.

I ain't an engineer, but if I were one, that's what I'd say.

NOW, I'm between a rock, and a hard place, Steve !

I've been going back/forth, between D/T the top rails of my Rossi 92 for a Williams 94AE top-mount peep, or D/T'ing the center of my home-made safety plug for Tim Skinner's Lo-Pro peep - which is a little like your idea.
I was gonna thin the Skinner lock nut by 50%.

What sort of timeframe are you looking at, to come up with prices & a delivery ETA ?

IF I WERE on the Rules Committee, and were answering your question... I'd have to say it falls in that "receiver sight" category... which would lead me to believe it isn't.

Yep, the elevation adjustable version is basically a D&T-ed safety plug with the peep on a threaded staff with a lock nut. The Skinner would work but a larger diameter staff would be more durable. To cut some production cost I'm looking for a ready made staff that is big enough. For now the Peep/Safety is priority. I'm waiting on the CNC folks to tell me what the cost will be to produce them.

That's a great idea. Even non-adjustable would work for me; I'm a lazy reloader and usually stick with one load. It looks a bit tall, as if it would require a higher front sight.

As you can tell from the date I originally did that one several years ago. I too thought it was a good idea, but what has happened is when we came out with the
Adjustable Bolt-Mounted Peep Sight Safety Replacement
Folks much preferred it mainly because it is elevation adjustable and it rubs out the poorly designed safety.
Image

So, there was not enough demand for the fixed safety peep to justify the production cost.

I'm sorry to hear that, Steve - but there's still a solution for those handy enough.

As posted above, I turned ( on my power hand drill) a filler for the old Rossi bolt safety hole in the bolt top, then D/T'd it's center 6-48 to accept the Skinner LoPro special-ordered (no extra charge) peepsight.
