OT: Shop Project, "French fit" Schofield Gun Box
Hello gang:
Thought I'd share some pictures of my latest shop project, a "French-fitted" storage box for my Uberti Schofield.
Got the plain box for $20.00, spent $5.00 for a lid support, $3.00 for green felt, and $30.00 for the cavalry belt buckle, crossed cavalry swords and oil bottle from Dixie Gun Works -- and with the addition of a few hours labor -- Voila', here's a neat felt-lined storage box. I cut the first form for the gun from 1" structural foam, which cut really easy on my scroll saw, and then when the dimensions were correct, I transferred those to a 3/4" piece of pine. I have to admit, the "French-fit" felt lining came out much better than I'd ever anticipated. Kinda impressed myself !?!? -- -- might have to make another to see if it was a fluke or not... Does the gun shoot any better??? Nope, but since it sits more than it shoots -- at least now it's sitting in "style".
Tight groups!

That's pretty neat. If I had a box like that I'd have to buy a gun worthy of it.

Very nice job - Thanks for posting it !
Is it the pic, or is the label on the inside of the lid a bit loose ?
I had a few start to come off, when I first started making boxes, but a friend taught me the art of decoupage - and now the paper labels look like they're part of the wood.
It's not historically "correct", but I like the look & utility.

Sure does look nice. Good work there. What type of green felt did you use. Some types of felt will strip the finish off of a blued gun if it gets the slightess bit damp. seems to contain an acid or something. Hope this never happens. It does shine nicely. Good Luck.

I've found the problen to actually lie with the adhesive(s), rather than the felt.
Some adhesives emit a noxious acid and/or fumes as they cure - with some continuing to do so well after they dry/cure.
I lost the finish on one side of a pristine, blued, 8 3/8" S&W M-48 like that.
I now use non-toxic adhesives from a Craft Store - stuff that simply wasn't available yet, when I first started making pistol boxes.

Re: OT: Shop Project, "French fit" Schofield Gun Box
Thanks all for the kind complements!
Later this spring -- after I finish another already-started project for JReed -- I will make another box (got this one locally, at a gun shop) for a Uberti 1862 Pocket Police that is coming from trapdoor, and God Willing and the creek don't rise, I will take pictures as I build it and post a tutorial of sorts.
As for the felt or glue affecting the finish, my safe is so crowded (shoulda boughta bigga one...) the new box won't fit, so the Schofield is in its factory box for now. Have had a Colt 1861 Navy in a felt box for a few years now with no problems, but I check her out every few weeks (she's such a "good looker", it's hard to stay away...)

Yes, it is loose -- sharp eyes! -- It's only held on with double-sided tape for now, as I may change it or something. May have to check out your idea though...Is it the pic, or is the label on the inside of the lid a bit loose ?
