Building the part up with welding before careful file work to fit it properly does sound like it would work. Heat treatment is not too difficult. Used motor oil is a decent quench medium, and the synthetic type is less prone to fires than the regular oil. Keep a metal lid handy to smother any fire. ...

If it made guarding your sidearm become an ingrained habit, then it wasn't such a bad thing for them to do. I was never a cop, but I was Army Infantry. Keeping your firearm in your control should be something you do without conscious thought.

Standard does look good, but I am just too cheap to pay that kind of price. I would probably go with a Ruger Vaquero before I would spend those big bucks for something I wouldn't shoot much.
