Mine holds five in the mag, if ya close the bolt it loads the gun as it`s supposed too. I don`t think the gun is designed to be able to put five rounds in the mag only and close the bolt on an empty chamber. In that case only four rounds can be placed in the mag so you can push them down so the bolt...

Just a little more of my opinion, it depends on the gun and caliber.
As i said ten rounds in a nine lb 1876 makes a ten lb gun which gets real heavy in a hurry.
Six rounds in it is still more power than a carbine in a lesser cal.
When i carry the 35 Rem Marlin i load full as with the 94-30-30 and 92.

I carry my 76 win. in 45-60 or my Marlin 95 cowboy in 45-70 the most so nine rounds of that adds a pound to the rifle

I generally put six in total.
