44-40 works for me, just as it did for tens of thousands of hunters/cowboys back in the day. Although I can document 45-90/45 Colt for a lot of the guys arrested to end the Wyoming range war. The army officer whose unit caught them documented every weapon confiscated.

Re: More on 44-40 exploring reloading

I have a few questions. What does your bore slug? What diameter are you sizing your bullets? What is the twist in your barrel? Is it possible that the twist rate in your barrel is too slow for the heavier bullets? Since the 217 grain cast very hard is starting to shoot more accurately I'd look hard ...

Maybe false economy? I've been struggling for 30 years with an old Lyman 450 after once owning a semi-auto Star type sizer. Well it had a motor on it and used Star dies but I foolishly let it go with a Magma casting machine. If I weren't so old I'd just buy a Star.

Someone mentioned expander plug and I realized I'd forgotten to mention that I use the expander from 44 Spec/Mag. Which is correct for .429 bullets.

I do, (on the guns I shoot a lot) open the throats to .430-.431 and touch up the forcing cones. I really need to shoot some groups.

Old Savage, My smokeless load is 5.5 of 238 and the same 200 grain RNFP. Keep in mind that I am using .429 bullets, the bore size of most modern 44s.
