Re: Which BLACK POWDER cartridge for deer???

I mostly use 45-70 or 45-90 (caliber of original 86 I own) to take deer with black powder but I am a huge fan of the 44-40 too which I load almost exclusively with ffg. Pay attention to advice and use a drop tube. It makes a difference as does lube. At least try some SPG to be sure what your combo w...

Bite the bullet and buy some SPG bullet lube and try it. Yeah, it's a little expensive but we know it works. Too, I think you need to size your bullets. Mostly to be sure they are round and uniform. I like ffg and about 1/8 inch compression and if you really want good accuracy it must be drop tubed....

I own representatives of both barrel lengths and usually pick the saddle ring carbine. The last year or so my ability to walk went away so a lot of the time I take a 26" 1886 since I'm just gonna be sitting in my little hooch anyway. My fave when I could walk was a 25-35 SRC.

When I need new backing I just take a trip down the alley behind one or the other appliance store in our town. Those big pieces of cardboard work very well and if I remember to bring them inside when I'm through, they last a long time. Targets staple to them easily and the price is right.

I have a knee that needs to be replaced. It's been bone on bone for quite a while so I get my friend the knee replacement doctor (who also owns a local gun store) to schedule me for surgery. My 2 favorite 1911s have "Metalloy" frame groups and one has black chrome on the slide. The high lubricity of the Metalloy is a marvelous aid to keeping them running. The one built by Frank Pachmeyer has over 100,000 rounds through it and shows very little wear.

I'm with Griff on this. I only compress about 1/8th inch and use a card wad in the 44-40 reserving the drop tube for 45-70 and 45-90. In the big boys I notice a difference in fouling and sound. I never use the drop tube on shot shells either.
