Re: August 2017 Levergun Postal Match

Had our monthly 22 and pistol cartridge lever gun silhouette shoot today, so I brought along a rifle that I just installed an MVA soule sight on to get 50 and 100 yard settings. Set up a target stand at the pig line and after sighting in shot three attempts at the postal match during my third relay ...

Re: Which BLACK POWDER cartridge for deer???

I shoot all three mentioned calibers, and have loaded and shot all three using black powder. Of the three mentioned, I'd use my 38-55 for whitetail - with the awesome 255 grain Big Lube bullet specifically designed to carry the lube required to keep black powder fouling under control. http://www.big...

Re: August 2017 Levergun Postal Match

Stopped off at the range on the way home from work so I could post a pistol score. My standard silhouette loads of 115gr plain base cast over 4756.

Looks like I have work to do on the rifle caliber...

Re: Marlin 1895 CB 45-70 JM Stamped

I'd take the 45-70 Cowboy any day over the 44 mag carbine. I've shot both, and the 45-70 can do anything the .44 can do, and a darn site more. Here on the West Coast, a JM 45-70 Cowboy is near impossible to find under the 1100 dollar mark as they are snapped up by silhouette and cowboy action shoote...

Re: August 2017 Levergun Postal Match

Never saw this post because it wasn't stickied up top as usual... Anyway, we didn't have our usual lever gun rifle silhouette match this month, so I decided to get the 45-70 out and shoot this postal match with it instead. I figured that the black on this target was just slightly bigger than a chick...

Re: July 2017 Levergun Postal Match

Its an Optical illusion - the linked B6 target is an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet, and the B6 target I printed out at work is 11 x 17, so you see the complete 7 ring and part of the 6 ring. The actual ring sizes are identical in both targets. I'm going to try again this week - trying to keep everything in the b...

That rifle will be my next levergun (to match my 32-20 and 218 Bee). I sure as heck will be shooting it no matter how nice it is...

Re: February 2017 Levergun Postal Match

Baja Traveler, that 96 score is confirmed... are you sure that "10" at about 10:30 ain't just cutting the "X" ring... even the tiniest bit... I'm generous... It's touching the ring, but did not break it. I'm more strict I guess - if the boundary isn't broken I don't count it. No...

Re: February 2017 Levergun Postal Match

Alright, I'll get in on this - as it will be good practice for my lever gun silhouette matches. Broke out the rifle I shoot my best scores with - Marlin 1894CL in 32-20. Downloaded the target and set at 50 yards - even at 50 yards that black bull is huge, I kept loosing the front bead in it. I'm muc...

Re: Springs for Rossi m92 .357

I spent 6 months trying to find a Rossi 92 in .357 for our local metallic silhouette shoots. None to be found in the country, then on a whim I called Steve - he had just finished slicking up and refinishing the stock on the last one he had. Cost a bit more than an off the shelf Rossi, but boy does i...

Re: Marlin 32-20 coyote kill

Wow - thats awesome! I have the same rifle (and the 218 Bee) and it is my go-to rifle for lever gun silhouette in the pistol cartridge class, using the same bullet and 5.5gr 4756. Mine is a lighter load than yours, so I just took note of your load for future reference.

Two of my biggest regrets - One: Never having bought a .22 diamondback when I had the chance, and Two: selling my Python in the late 80's.

Re: How to remove Saddle Ring "loop" on 1892 Rossi?????

I like your solution! looks good to me... I did find a use for the saddle ring on my Buffalo Bill Comm. 30-30 - I use it to anchor my thumb when shooting offhand in silhouette matches (and only because of the way I hold the rifle). Other than that it's about as usefull as tits on a boar... I'm hopin...

Re: what gun you wish

I'll be the third person in this thread who regrets the loss of their Colt Python. A beautiful 6" blued work of art I sold to my bunkmate in the Coast Guard with the intention of replacing it with the (then) new stainless model. Never did buy the replacement, and I'm still kicking myself for it.

Re: MARLIN 39A

The early Marlins used the manufacture year as the first two digits of the serial number. I would say yours was made in 1935. But from what I understand the actual 39A designation wasn't used until a year later in 1936. One of the true Marlin historians here will have to chime in and verify.

Re: OT Which bullets for a Garand?

I've been shooting gas checked cast for the past several years with great success. Better than 1k rounds down the pipe and No leading or gas port problems that I've been warned about by those who say it can't be done. I've been casting up Lyman 311299 200gr medium hardness, checking them and loading...
