We have only a couple of oak trees and the squirrels harvest those acorns except for the few that our Welsh Ponies eat.
We do have several pecan trees, and tried harvesting the pecans the first couple years we lived here, but soon tired of the work and the fact no ones wanted to buy them.

Lets not get into an "arms race" as my 45-90 already shoots the 450 grain NF FPS at 2150 fps and has taken ele, buff, and leopard. One shot kills on the ele and most of the several buff. Hunter was our 86er !

Tutt, My Winchester 1895 .405 WCF is happy (no high pressure} with 300 GR NF at 2250 fps (my fave load) and Woodleigh 400 grain Weldcore or solid ( I used both) . Not a lever action, but the Winchester Model 61 I bought with my paper route money when I was a kid. Here is a picture of my grandson learning to shoot it when he was a kid - he is now about to graduate college and the rifle still is a winner.

My two favorite big bore lever guns are also the 1886 45-90 and 1895 in .405. Both were successful in Africa and America. Both will get a workout this fall too.

When a kid, I compared the MV of the Red Ryder with that of my Daisy pump and bought the pump. The spring in the magazine also kept the BBs from tolling about and bugging me.
I once killed a flushing quail with it and made quite an impression on my hunting buddy.

For my recent birthday my son gave me his like new SKB hardback take down case as he no longer needed it. He even trimmed it to handle my 45-90 DR with or without the scope mounted.
Now I have a soft SKB case and the hard back SKB case and and all my TD rifles and shot guns have TD cases.

The standard 1895 .405 load is 300 grain bullet at 2200 fps. That can easily be up to 2400, but is not necessary, especially with NF bullets which took a water buff with one shot. Doc, Your starting and then dying symptoms sound exactly like what my JD diesel does when I forget to open the valve between the fuel tank and the engine. I usually turn off the the valve after using the tractor. Turning on the valve is part of my start up ritual along with checking oil, water, etc....

What's also interesting is that the .458 at 2.5" and the 45-90 at 2.4" are 3 grains delta, so I think its probably because the .458 is a bit fatter, as the .1" would not be 3 grains volume." Indeed, In my VV load book, the .45-70 N133 loads come just before the .458 Win Mag loads...
